Local
Governments of Orissa Joined World AIDS Day Campaign

Around forty million people are living with HIV throughout the world - and that number increases in every region every day. Ignorance and prejudice are fuelling the spread of a preventable disease. Every year 1st December is observed World AIDS Day, is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS and build awareness among citizens, local governments, national governments, international agencies and civil society. World AIDS Day provides an excellent opportunity to highlight and build awareness among citizens on key issues of AIDS.
This year, for the first time City Managers' Association Orissa (CMAO) requested Local Governments, Mayors, Chairpersons to take part in organizing activities in raising awareness and stimulate debate on the important theme of accountability developed by the World AIDS Campaign. CMAO supported with information and promotional materials and a poster for use by any Municipal Bodies.
Number cities responded to CMAO's request in organizing the activities on World AIDS Day 2006. Similarly Mayors of the Local Government joined various programmes & rallies organized by educational & charitable institutes etc.
In Brajarajnagar Municipality an awareness workshop was conducted on HIV / AIDS. The workshop was attended by Chairperson, Elected Representatives, Officials and voluntary organisation etc. Similarly in Jatani Municipality both awareness workshop cum rallies were organized with participation of chairpersons, executive officers etc. Various programmes were also organsied Puri Municipality in Holy city of Puri. The city of Puri is not only importance for religious purpose but also a famous for tourist destination of India.
