Infrastructure

Road Network:
Since internal rail linkages in the State is inadequate, road and road transport has assumed significance in order to boost the economic activities in the State. But it is seen that (as reported in Economic Survey 2004-05 of Government of Orissa) only about 40% of villages in the State have all-weather connectivity as compared to 60% at the national level. But the State has 1447 kms. of road per 1000 sq. Kms  of area which is much higher than the All-India figure of 768 kms and even better than that of advanced States like Maharashtra (1241 kms), Punjab (1282 kms). Rural connectivity and inadequate transport facilities both public & private are genuine handicaps in Health Outreach.

Village Electrification:
The State has 46,989 inhabited villages out of which 38,258 villages, representing coverage of 81.42% have been electrified by the end of 2003-04. Government of India, have fixed a target for 100% village electrification by March 2007. To make a state-wise comparison we may take the figures of village electrification by 31st March 2002, which shows that the percentage achieved in Orissa is 75% which is lower than All-India figures of 87%.  State like Gujarat, Goa, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Nagaland, Punjab and Tamil Nadu have all achieved 100% village electrification.
Industry:
Rich mineral resources and abundance of raw materials gives good scope for industrialization in the state. There are some large industries such as Rourkela Steel Plant, National Aluminium Company, Indian Charge Chrome Ltd., Paradeep Phosphates and local based power plants setup during different period. By the end of 2003 – 04, the state had 361 large and medium industries with an investment of Rs.3596.86 Crore and employment potential of 85884 persons. The state has formulated new industrial policy 2001 to attract private and foreign investments and reduce overall regional disparities recognizing the direct link & beneficial effects on the employment and livelihood of the population. The state Govt. has embark the vigorous industrialization programme for setting up mineral based industry (iron & steel) Aluminium & chromate with an employment potential of nearly 4-5 lakhs and addition of hundreds of crores to the economy. The prospects of offshore oil near Paradeep and the booming IT sector in the country have made Orissa a potential destination for major growth in the sectors.
