INFORMATION ON SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE STATE

SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURES IN ORISSA

To achieve the aims & objectives as laid dawn in the Sports Policy, infrastructures have major role to play as it provides the requisite physical facilities for training/nurturing of talents as well as venue for organising different Sports & Games. Till now following Infrastructures have been developed in the State.

A) STATE LEVEL SPORTS COMPLEX

I) Jawaharlal Indoor Stadium, Cuttack

This Centrally air-conditioned Stadium has been built for organisation of competitions like National/State Meets, Coaching Programmes in various indoor games, with a sitting capacity for 5,626 spectators. The Stadium provides the facilities for Indoor activities like Gymnastics, Badminton, Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Weight Lifting, Judo & Wrestling etc.

II) Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.

The Kalinga Stadium at Bhubaneswar has subsequently been converted into a Sports Complex. A 8-lane Synthetic Athletic track has been laid by M/S Polytan, Germany in this complex to provide facilities for National & International competitions in sprint events. Following facilities have also been developed in this complex by I.D.C.O.

a) Stadium with 3 side Gallery at East, West & South for 55,000 spectators

b) A Sports Hostel to accommodate 120 nos. Students with 20 nos. of Staff quarters.

c) Competition & practice fields for outdoor games such as Football/ Hockey/ Athletic/ Basketball/ Volleyball/ Tennis & Cricket etc.

d) A Gymnasium Hall to carryout different physical training.

e. A Swimming Pool of International Standard and Gym.

III) Sports Complex, Berhampur:

Sports Complex at Berhampur has been constructed by Orissa Bridge Construction Corporation Ltd.. Stadium with Galleries Number-3,4,5 & 6 along with dormitories have been completed. The following facilities have been provided in the complex.

a) Flood-light Basketball Court & Volleyball Court.

b) A 32 seated Sports Hostel is functioning in the dormitories.

IV) Synthetic Hockey Surface at Panposh, Rourkela.

State Government with the Central assistance from Sports Authority of India have laid a Synthetic Hockey Surface (Poligrass Turf) at Panposh Rourkela during 1993 with a view to provide scientific & systematic training in Hockey to the budding talents of the State. The Hostel trainees of Rourkela Sports Hostel under-take regular practice on this Synthetic surface. The relaying work of the Turf has already been completed and is functional.

B) DISTRICT LEVEL STADIA

26 Nos. of Utility Stadia, including 2 S.P.D.A Centres & 7 growth Centers have been developed at following places of the State, so as to provide outdoor facilities for Organisation of different Sports & Games as well as practice.

C) Gymnasium-cum-Indoor Halls:

Construction of Gymnasium-cum-Indoor Halls at District Head Quarters have been taken up by Government with assistance of Central Government in order to provide facilities for organisation of different indoor games like Table Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Gymnastics, Weight lifting & Wrestling etc. Gymnasium-cum-Indoor Hall at following Dist. Head quarters have came up in the following places.

5	Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi
6	Dhenkanal (Under S.P.D.A Sheme)
7	Phulbani (Kandhamal), (Under S.P.D.A Scheme)
8	Puri (Annexed with a Sports Hostel)

This apart, two Gymnasium-cum-Indoor Halls, one at unit-I, Bhubaneswar & other at Sahid Nagar, Bhubaneswar have been constructed and operational which fulfills the requirement of Indoor games in the State Capital.

D) Development of Playfields:

With a view to provide playing/sporting facilities in rural areas of the State, Government has provided financial assistance for developed of 467 playfield in the State covering 274 Blocks so far.
