Overview of the Department

      1.     Orissa is endowed with a variety of vast mineral deposits and therefore occupies a prominent place in the country as a mineral rich State. Abundant reserves of high-grade Iron ore, Coal, Bauxite, Chromites along with other minerals such as Limestone, Dolomite, Manganese, Tin, Nickel, Vanadium, Gemstone, Granite, Graphite, Lead, Gold etc., are extensively available in the State. This has opened up immense possibilities for locating mineral based industries for manufacture of Steel, Cement, Alumina/ Aluminum etc., along with setting up other auxiliary and ancillary downstream industries.

2     The landmass of the State comprises rocks among other things as old as 3,800 million years to recent formations, representing almost the entire geological time scale, preliminary geological mapping of a major part of the State. Progressive refinement in concept and techniques of mineral exploration, integrated interpretation of remote sensing data with ground geological information and intensive investigation of the potential mineral bearing areas of the State, have led to significant discoveries of minerals and ores and sizeable addition to the known resources during the last decade. As such High Resolution Aeromagnetic Survey has already covered an area of 75,000 Sq. Km. with Australian assistance for targeting ground water potential and mineral deposits.

3       With opening up of the economy and liberalization policies, these mineral resources have now drawn worldwide attention for large scale mining and setting up of mineral based industries. With a view to gainfully utilizing these rich mineral resources, systematic survey and assessment of the mineral deposits of the State, their exploitation, administration of mines and mineral concession, enforcement measures on prevention of illegal mining and smuggling of minerals, assessment and collection of mining revenue, study on the impact of mining operation on environment, formulation of appropriate environmental control measures, and research &  exploitation of areas and minerals for meeting the needs of mineral based industries in the country, constitute the main function and activities of Department of Steel and Mines. These functions and activities are discharged through the Directorate of Mines, Directorate of Geology and Orissa Mining Corporation Ltd. Besides, this Department has taken effective steps for setting up of integrated Steel Plants in the State.
